One Community, One Voice continues to be guided by research findings that indicate there is an undisputed link between parent involvement and student school success. This position has been supported by all in our community - parents, students, teachers, principals, business leaders and the Blue Ribbon Task Force that set forth the One Community, One Voice blueprint for academic excellence for all students.
A significant finding of a recent One Community, One Voice Parent Involvement Evaluation indicated that parent involvement is viewed differently by parents, students, teachers, and principals. One Community One Voice holds the belief that the community needs a common vision and focus that pulls together all who are interested in school success for all students. One common vision is the spirit of team competition born through the establishment of a district-wide elementary school Academic Challenge Program where all students have opportunities to participate and compete, and are expected to be successful.
Following the 2005 Academic Challenge Competition, parents and students requested that this Program become a year-round event. This request led to the first every District Academic Challenge Mayor’s Cup competition May 2006 that brought together more than 300 students from schools and neighborhoods teams who competed for the Mayor’s Cup trophies. This competition was followed with the third annual Academic Challenge Couty-wide Superintendent’s Cup competition in July, 2006. More than 800 students competing for the Superintendent’s Cup trophies and college scholarships, demonstrated that they are recognizing and embracing the notion that acquiring knowledge is a worthy endeavor.
