The Lexington Urban League Young Professionals (LULYP) are continuing to make a significant impact in the Lexington community. With programs and community service projects ranging from addressing the needs for middle and high school students to HIV/AIDS testing, LULYP is an organization for those wanting to effect social change.
Is is because of each member’s dedication and ability to surpass the minimum requirement of 3 community service hours per month the LULYP { received the 2006 Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Unity Award and the 2006 Frankfort_Lexington Link’s Youth Community Service Award. “All 64 members are active, striving to impact social change, and interested in stimulating growth in Lexington,” says Annissa M. Franklin 2004-2006 president.
Members of the organization are continually be recognized as leaders, volunteers, and change advocates. Meka Davis was recognized by Governor Fletcher for her continued disaster relief for Hurricane Katttrina victims. Four members were awarded the 2006 Rising Star award by the Lexington Young Professionals Association. Rodney Jackson 2006 2008 president, became the first African American Director of Finance for any public school system I Kentucky. Still members like Wallace Barber, Phil Wilkins, Carolyn Dunn and Tamika Anderson-Lee are successful entrepreneurs. “There’s a wide array of member in LULYP. No two people are alike and that has made this a great organization to be a part of,” says new member Shannon Brooks.
LULYP supports the nation 5-pronged empowerment agenda by offering programs and/or participation in each of the following areas.
EDUCATION AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT Lifting & Impacting Futures Today - conference for middle and high school students that addresses their needs as they prepare for college and/or the work force.
ECONOMICS Tax Free - a free VITA tax preparation site for low-income to moderate-income families Junior Achievement - members volunteers as JA teachers at local elementary schools.
HEALTH & QUALITY OF LIFE Softball Tournament - emphasizes and supports fatherhood involvement and family fitness.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP Voter registration, surveys and discussion panels, and candidate forums
CIVIL RIGHTS & RACIAL JUSTICE Signature gala promoting unity and justice for all held in December each year Urban League Annual Dinner participation and support.
